Mouse

verbStandard termMaritime

To secure a hook with a lashing across its opening to prevent accidental release.

Wrapping spun yarn, wire, or small cord across the mouth of a hook, connecting the bill to the shank. This lashing prevents a sling or line from slipping out of the hook when the load slackens. It also adds structural strength, helping to keep the hook from straightening under a heavy pull.

Heard on the job

Mouse that crane hook with seizing wire before you hoist the cradle over the side.

Insider tip

A properly moused hook acts like a shackle, providing the speed of a hook with the security of a closed loop.
