Runner

nounStandard termMaritime

A line passed through a single block to increase the mechanical advantage of a tackle.

A length of rope rigged through a movable block to multiply pulling power, often forming the first part of a complex tackle system. By anchoring one end and pulling the other through the block attached to the load, the rigger doubles the force applied. It is heavily used in running rigging for backstays and heavy lifting gear.
