A penalty fee charged when a ship is delayed in port beyond its allotted time.

A financial penalty incurred by a charterer when a vessel takes longer to load or discharge cargo than the time stipulated in the charter party contract. It compensates the shipowner for the lost earning potential of the vessel while it sits idle at the berth.
