An unlicensed crew member responsible for manual labor and maintenance on a vessel.

An entry-level or standard crew member who handles the physical operation of a ship. Duties include handling mooring lines, chipping rust, painting, standing lookout watches, and assisting with cargo gear. They form the backbone of the deck department under the direction of the bosun or mate.
