Tret

nounStandard termMaritime

A historic allowance made to buyers for waste or refuse in a bulk cargo.

Tret is an old commercial shipping calculation granting the purchaser a deduction of four pounds for every 104 pounds of cargo weight after the tare is removed. It was designed to compensate buyers for inevitable spoilage, dust, or refuse mixed into bulk goods during a long voyage.

The cargo manifest lists the gross weight, but you must deduct tare and tret to calculate the final duty.
