Layout

nounStandard termElectronics

The physical arrangement of components and traces on a chip or circuit board.

Layout is the geometric representation of an electronic circuit, translating a logical schematic into physical shapes. For integrated circuits, it defines the exact polygons of silicon, oxide, and metal that will be etched during manufacturing. For printed circuit boards, it determines where every pad, via, and copper trace sits to ensure signal integrity and manufacturability.

Heard on the job

The schematic is done, but the layout is going to take another two weeks because of the tight spacing constraints.
