This semiconductor device consists of millions or billions of microscopic transistors and capacitors arranged in a grid array. Depending on the architecture, it can hold data temporarily while powered, or permanently for firmware storage. It is packaged in epoxy resin with metal pins or pads for soldering onto a motherboard.
