Wrap

nounStandard termAutomotive

A large vinyl film applied directly over a vehicle's original paint to change its color or add custom graphics.

This aftermarket modification uses large sheets of pressure-sensitive vinyl to completely or partially cover the exterior panels. It provides a temporary aesthetic change that can mimic matte, gloss, metallic, or color-shifting paint jobs. Beyond styling, the thick vinyl layer protects the factory clear coat from UV rays, light scratches, and rock chips, and can be peeled off prior to resale.

Heard on the job

The customer wants a matte black wrap on the roof and hood to match the new alloy wheels.

Insider tip

A quality wrap requires flawless paint underneath; applying vinyl over peeling clear coat or rust will cause the wrap to fail and pull off the remaining paint upon removal.
