Back door

nounStandard termAutomotive

A rear passenger door on a sedan or SUV, or the rear cargo access door on a van.

A back door provides access to the rear passenger compartment of a four-door vehicle or the cargo area of a van. On passenger cars, it houses the rear window regulators and child safety locks. On commercial vans, back doors often feature a split barn-door design with heavy-duty hinges that allow them to swing open 180 or 270 degrees for loading pallets.

Heard on the job

The latch cable snapped on the left back door, so you can only open it from the outside.
