Liftgate

nounStandard termAutomotive

A rear door on a utility vehicle or hatchback that hinges at the roofline and opens upward.

This single-piece rear closure provides wide access to the cargo area of utility vehicles and hatchbacks. Gas struts or motorized linear actuators support the heavy panel when opened. It differs from a traditional trunk lid by incorporating the rear window glass and hinging directly from the roof structure rather than the lower body.

Heard on the job

The liftgate struts are completely blown, so watch your head when you grab the spare tire out of the back.

Insider tip

Power liftgates often have adjustable height settings programmed through the key fob or dash menu to prevent the glass from striking low garage ceilings.
