Midengine

adjectiveStandard termAutomotive

A vehicle layout where the engine sits between the front and rear axles.

A chassis configuration that places the engine block behind the passenger compartment but ahead of the rear axle. This layout centralizes the vehicle's mass, significantly reducing the polar moment of inertia to provide sharper turn-in and superior handling dynamics. Servicing these vehicles often requires removing interior panels or accessing the engine from underneath.

Doing a timing belt on a midengine car is a nightmare because you have exactly zero clearance against the firewall.
