An automatic leveling system uses ride-height sensors and an onboard air compressor to inflate or deflate pneumatic shocks or air springs. When a heavy load compresses the rear suspension, the system pumps air into the shocks to restore a level stance. This prevents the headlights from blinding oncoming traffic and maintains proper steering geometry.
Heard on the job
Check the air lines on the rear shocks, the automatic leveling system keeps running the compressor but the back end is still sagging.
Insider tip
The most common failure point is a small leak in the air bladders, which forces the compressor to overwork and eventually burn out.
