Automatic transmission

nounStandard termAutomotive

A gearbox that changes gear ratios independently without a manual clutch pedal.

An automatic transmission relies on a torque converter and complex planetary gearsets controlled by hydraulic pressure to shift gears. The transmission control module directs solenoids in the valve body to route fluid, engaging different clutch packs as vehicle speed and engine load change. This design provides smooth power delivery and requires no direct shifting input from the driver.

We need to drop the pan on that automatic transmission and inspect the magnet for metal shavings.

  • Automated manual transmission: An automatic uses planetary gears and a torque converter, while an automated manual uses standard gears and a computer-actuated conventional clutch.
