Column shifter

nounStandard termAutomotive

A gear selector lever mounted on the steering column rather than the floor console.

A column shifter operates the transmission via a linkage running down the steering column. This placement frees up floor space in the cabin, allowing for a continuous bench seat. While traditionally associated with older three-speed manuals and classic automatics, it remains standard on many heavy-duty trucks and police interceptors.

Heard on the job

Put the column shifter in neutral and make sure the parking brake is set before you get under there.

Insider tip

The linkage bushings on older column shifters wear out frequently, causing a sloppy feel and making it hard to find park.
