Air ride

nounShop talkAutomotive

A pneumatic suspension system that uses compressed air instead of traditional steel coil or leaf springs.

An air ride suspension replaces conventional metal springs with heavy-duty rubber airbags inflated by an onboard compressor. The system adjusts ride height and stiffness dynamically based on load, speed, and driver preference. While it provides superior comfort and load-leveling capabilities, the rubber bladders and plastic airlines are prone to dry rot, chafing, and slow leaks as the vehicle ages.

Heard on the job

The customer complained the truck was sagging in the rear, so check the air ride bags for pinhole leaks.

Insider tip

If the compressor runs constantly, you have a leak in the lines or bags, which will eventually burn out the compressor motor if left unfixed.
