Nail set

nounStandard termWoodworking

A small metal punch used to drive the head of a finish nail below the surface of the wood.

This hardened steel tool features a tapered tip that is slightly smaller than the head of the nail it strikes. By placing the tip on the nail head and striking the back of the set with a hammer, a carpenter can sink the fastener without marring the surrounding wood with the hammer face. The resulting hole is then filled with putty to hide the fastener completely.

Heard on the job

Hand me the 1/32 nail set so I can sink these brads before we start filling the holes.

Insider tip

Always choose a nail set with a tip slightly smaller than the nail head to prevent the tool from slipping off and denting the workpiece.
