Trim

verbStandard termWoodworking

To cut away a small amount of material from a workpiece to achieve a tight fit.

Trimming is the final adjustment made to a piece of wood, often removing just a shaving or a fraction of an inch to perfect a joint or align an edge. Carpenters trim components using a block plane, chisel, or saw to ensure everything sits flush and tight. This fine-tuning eliminates gaps and corrects minor variations in the framing or millwork.

Heard on the job

Just trim a hair off the bottom of that casing so it sits flat on the floor.

Insider tip

Always trim the hidden side of a joint if possible, leaving the visible factory edge intact for a cleaner look.
