This method relies on a specialized joiner tool to cut semi-circular slots in opposing edges of two workpieces. Oval-shaped, compressed beechwood splines are glued into the slots, where they swell upon contact with water-based glue to lock the joint tightly. It provides rapid alignment for panel glue-ups and moderate structural strength for cabinet boxes.
Heard on the job
I'm not cutting traditional mortises for these shop cabinets, just going with biscuitry to get them clamped up.
Insider tip
Biscuitry is excellent for aligning faces perfectly flush during a glue-up, but it lacks the shear strength needed for load-bearing chair or table joints.
