Hot pass

nounStandard termWelding

The second pass on a pipe weld, run hot and fast right after the root to burn out trapped slag.

Pass laid immediately over the root bead with higher current and travel speed. It burns out slag trapped along the root edges, reinforces a thin root before it can crack and ties the root into the bevel walls. On cross-country pipelines it follows the root within minutes as part of the spread sequence. Fill passes then build up the groove and the cap finishes it.

Heard on the job
