Specialty masking tapes, such as thick rubber tape that survives grit, aluminum foil tape that reflects heat, and glass-cloth tape with silicone adhesive for plasma and HVOF. Used as a verb, taping up a part means masking it. Tape has to be pressed down hard at the edges, cut cleanly and pulled at the right time, or it lets grit and coating under the edge or causes bridging.
Tape off the keyway with the glass cloth, the blue stuff won't survive the HVOF.
Pull spray tape while the part is still warm, folding it back over itself at a low angle, so the coating breaks cleanly at the edge.
