Tape
Tape turns up in 2 fields: thermal spray, printing. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Tape in thermal spray
Masking tape used for blasting and spraying, or as a verb, masking a part off before coating.
Specialty masking tapes, such as thick rubber tape that survives grit, aluminum foil tape that reflects heat, and glass-cloth tape with silicone adhesive for plasma and HVOF. Used as a verb, taping up a part means masking it. Tape has to be pressed down hard at the edges, cut cleanly and pulled at the right time, or it lets grit and coating under the edge or causes bridging.
"Tape off the keyway with the glass cloth, the blue stuff won't survive the HVOF."
Tape in printing
A flexible, continuous belt used to guide paper through a printing press or folding machine.
A flat, woven or synthetic belt that runs on pulleys to transport paper sheets through a press, folder, or bindery equipment. Tapes maintain tension on the sheet, ensuring it stays aligned as it moves between cylinders or folding knives. Proper tape tension is critical to prevent paper jams and misregistration.
"We need to replace the delivery tapes on the folder, they're getting slack and skewing the signatures."
