Rib

nounStandard termTextiles

A raised ridge in knitted material or woven cloth.

A structural pattern that creates vertical ridges in fabric. In knitting, it is formed by alternating knit and purl stitches in the same row, producing a stretchy fabric ideal for cuffs and necklines. In weaving, a rib is created by using thicker yarns in either the warp or weft to form a raised cord effect.

Heard on the job

Work a two-by-two rib for three inches to make the sleeve cuff.

Insider tip

Ribbing pulls in naturally, making it much narrower than stockinette stitch worked on the same number of stitches.
