An abbreviation for stocking stitch, the most fundamental knitted fabric structure. It is produced by knitting one row and purling the next when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. The resulting fabric has a smooth face of V-shaped stitches and a bumpy reverse side of purl ridges.
