Trapunto

nounStandard termTextiles

A quilting technique that creates a raised, three-dimensional surface by stuffing specific stitched motifs.

This dimensional embroidery method uses two layers of fabric stitched together with an outline of a design. The artisan then inserts extra batting or yarn through the backing layer into the enclosed shapes to puff them up. It produces a sculpted, high-relief effect on the right side of the fabric, often used on collars, cuffs, and decorative quilts.

Heard on the job

I'm going to use trapunto on the bodice floral motifs to make the petals stand out from the flat background.

Insider tip

Always use a loosely woven fabric for the backing layer so you can easily separate the threads to insert the stuffing without cutting the cloth.
