This technique creates a dense, piled surface by using a crochet-like hook to draw loops of material from the underside of a foundation cloth up to the top. The stiff backing, traditionally burlap or linen, grips the loops tightly enough that no knots are required to secure them. It allows for highly detailed, durable floor coverings and heavy tapestries.
Heard on the job
I'm using a finer monk's cloth for this rug hooking project so the wool strips sit tighter together.
Insider tip
Beginners often pull the loops too high or pack them too tightly, causing the finished rug to warp and curl at the edges.
