A basic sewing stitch made by passing the needle in and out of the fabric at regular intervals.

The simplest fundamental sewing and embroidery stitch, formed by weaving the needle up and down through the fabric in a continuous line. The stitch length and the spaces between stitches are usually kept equal. It is used for basting, gathering, mending, and decorative quilting.

Baste the side seams with a long running stitch before you take it to the machine.

Do not mix it up with

  • Backstitch: A running stitch leaves gaps between stitches on both sides, while a backstitch overlaps to create a solid line of thread on the front.
