A set of serrated metal ridges that emerge from the throat plate of a sewing machine. They move in a precise elliptical path: rising to grip the underside of the fabric against the presser foot, sliding backward to advance the material by one stitch length, and dropping below the plate to reset. This synchronized motion ensures even, consistent stitch lengths without the operator having to drag the cloth.

Drop the feed dogs before you try doing any free-motion quilting, or you'll fight the machine the whole time.
Insider tip
If your fabric is puckering or feeding unevenly, check if lint is packed between the teeth, preventing them from rising fully.
