A hand tool featuring a handle and a stiff wire shaft ending in a narrow hook or loop. It is designed to capture the shank or edge of a button and pull it securely through a buttonhole. Though largely associated with historical high-button shoes and corsets, tailors still use them for fastening long rows of buttons on bridal gowns or working with thick leathers.
Heard on the job
Use the buttonhook to pull those silk covered buttons through the loops so you don't fray the edges.
Insider tip
Push the hook through the buttonhole first, grab the button shank, and twist slightly as you pull it back through to avoid stretching the fabric.
