A closed-toe presser foot features a continuous metal or plastic ring around the needle drop area, rather than having the front cut away. This design provides maximum fabric control and downward pressure, preventing fine or stretchy materials from flagging (riding up the needle). While it offers superior stability, it reduces visibility of the exact stitching line compared to an open-toe foot.
Heard on the job
Swap out the open foot for a closed-toe foot before you topstitch that sheer chiffon so it doesn't pucker.
Insider tip
Use a closed-toe foot for general seaming and construction, but switch to an open-toe foot when doing applique or following a precise traced line.
