Thimble

nounStandard termTextiles

A protective cap worn on the finger to push needles through heavy fabric.

A small, pitted cup worn on the middle or index finger during hand sewing. It protects the fingertip while allowing the sewer to apply significant pressure to the eye end of a needle, forcing it through multiple layers of dense fabric or leather. The dimples on the surface catch the needle end to prevent it from slipping.

You'll definitely need a thimble to get that heavy canvas needle through the denim seam.
