Time-hopping

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A spread-spectrum transmission technique that varies the exact timing of data bursts using a pseudorandom sequence.

In this modulation scheme, the transmitter divides a frame into multiple time slots and transmits pulses in a sequence of slots determined by a cryptographic or pseudorandom code. The receiver must possess the same code sequence to synchronize and extract the data. It is heavily used in ultra-wideband communications and military radios to prevent jamming, avoid detection, and allow multiple users to share a channel without catastrophic collisions.

Heard on the job

We're using time-hopping on the ultra-wideband link so the sensor nodes don't step on each other's transmissions.
