Time division

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

The multiplexing of multiple signals over a single channel by assigning each a distinct time slot.

A method of sharing a communication medium where the bandwidth is allocated in alternating, discrete time intervals. Each user or data stream gets exclusive use of the channel for a fraction of a millisecond before yielding to the next. This allows a single frequency or physical cable to carry multiple independent channels simultaneously without them interfering with one another.
