Trellis

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A time-based graph used to map state transitions in digital encoding schemes.

A graphical representation of the states in a convolutional code, where nodes are arranged in vertical slices representing discrete time intervals. Each node connects to possible future states, forming a lattice structure. Engineers use trellis diagrams to design error-correcting codes and decode received signals by finding the most likely path through the graph, minimizing transmission errors over noisy channels.

Heard on the job

The Viterbi decoder traces back through the trellis to find the path with the lowest accumulated error metric.
