A technique for determining the physical location of a transmitter by measuring the exact time a signal arrives at multiple, spatially separated receiving stations. By comparing the arrival times, the system calculates hyperbolic curves of possible locations; the intersection of these curves pinpoints the source. It requires highly synchronized clocks at the receiver ends.
