Diverter

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A device or circuit that forwards incoming telephone calls to another destination.

A diverter intercepts calls directed to a specific line and automatically routes them to a different number or extension. Older physical diverters were standalone boxes wired into a PBX, while current implementations are software features within a telephone switch. Technicians use them to maintain continuous contact for emergency lines or off-hours answering services without requiring the caller to dial a new number.

Heard on the job

I set up a diverter on the main trunk so weekend calls bounce straight to the on-call mobile.
