Extension

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A short internal telephone number assigned to a specific endpoint within a private branch exchange.

An extension allows users within the same organization to call each other using a shortened dialing string, typically three to five digits. The private branch exchange maps this short code to a specific physical line, desk phone, or virtual software client. External callers reach an extension either through an automated attendant or by dialing a direct inward dialing number that maps to it.
