Anchor

nounStandard termRefractories

Metal or ceramic tie welded to the shell to hold a monolithic lining in place.

A V-, Y- or U-shaped stainless steel rod, or a ceramic anchor brick hung from steel, attached to the furnace shell to key a castable or plastic lining to it. Metal anchors typically reach about two-thirds to three-quarters of the lining thickness, are spaced on a set grid and get tip caps or a coating so they can expand without cracking the refractory. The alloy, from 304 up to 310 or nickel alloys, is picked for the temperature at the tip.

Heard on the job

Half the anchors on that wall aren't welded all the way round, fix them before the castable goes in.

Insider tip

Hit every anchor with a hammer before the pour. A ringing anchor is welded; a dull one is coming off with the first heat.
