Gunning

nounStandard termRefractories

Spraying refractory through a hose and nozzle with compressed air to build or repair a lining.

Pneumatic placement of refractory. In dry gunning, the dry mix is conveyed by air and water is added at the nozzle; in wet gunning, or shotcrete, a pre-mixed castable is pumped and set with an accelerator at the nozzle. Gunning builds new linings fast without forms and is the standard hot repair for BOFs, EAFs, ladles and cement kilns. Quality depends heavily on the nozzleman and on keeping rebound out of the lining.
