Train stop

nounStandard termRailroad

A mechanical or electronic trackside device that forces a train's brakes to apply if it passes a red signal.

A safety system designed to prevent collisions by automatically triggering an emergency brake application if a train violates a stop signal. Older mechanical versions use a trackside arm that physically trips a valve on the passing locomotive, while newer systems use inductive coils or transponders to enforce signal compliance electronically.

Heard on the job
