Automatic train control

nounStandard termRailroad

A safety overlay system that enforces speed limits and signal indications without engineer input.

A track-to-train communication and safety system that monitors a locomotive's speed against the current signal indication. If the engineer fails to acknowledge a restrictive signal or fails to brake appropriately, the system automatically cuts traction power and applies the air brakes to stop the train before a collision or derailment can occur.
