Seat lock

nounStandard termRailroad

A mechanical latch that secures a reversible passenger coach seat in its forward-facing position.

Reversible seats in older commuter and long-distance passenger cars feature a pivoting backrest that allows passengers to face either direction of travel. The seat lock is a floor-mounted or frame-mounted mechanical catch that secures the seat assembly once it is flipped. Conductors use a specialized key to release these latches at the end of the line, allowing the crew to walk the aisle and flip all the seats for the return trip.

Conductor, make sure every seat lock is engaged before we open the doors for the outbound crowd.

Insider tip

If a seat lock is jammed, kicking the base while turning the coach key usually frees the mechanism.
