Shoegear

nounStandard termRailroad

The mechanical assembly that holds the contact shoes for third-rail power collection.

The complete bracket, spring, and paddle assembly mounted to a locomotive or car truck that presses the contact shoe against an electrified third rail. It must maintain constant pressure to prevent arcing while absorbing the physical shock of bouncing over gaps and rail joints.

Heard on the job

We need to inspect the shoegear on the lead motor because it was sparking heavily across the diamond.
