Shunter

nounStandard termRailroad

A British and Commonwealth term for a locomotive or person that switches railcars.

A small, low-speed locomotive designed exclusively for moving cars around a yard, or the ground worker who directs these moves. In North American railroading, the locomotive is called a switcher and the worker is a switchman. The term is primarily British but appears in imported equipment manuals.

Heard on the job

The manual says this imported trackmobile acts as a shunter, but the guys just call it the critter.
