Reverse

adjectiveStandard termRailroad

The position of a track switch when it is lined for the diverging route rather than the straight main line.

The alignment of a turnout that directs a train away from the primary or straight-through route. In signal logic and dispatching, switches are either in the normal position for the main route or the reverse position for the diverging route. A dispatcher will command a switch to reverse to route a train into a siding or branch line.
