Return tag

nounStandard termRailroad

A physical or electronic routing label directing an empty freight car back to its owner or point of origin.

This routing instruction ensures that a leased or privately owned railcar finds its way home after being unloaded. Yard clerks and billing systems use the data on the tag to generate an empty waybill, preventing the equipment from being misrouted or sitting idle in a storage track. It dictates the exact interchange points the car must use on its reverse journey.

The unloader finished with that string of hoppers, so make sure they have a return tag before we pull them for the outbound drag.
