Double-stack trains load containers two deep in well cars, which sit low between the trucks so the stack can clear tunnels and bridges. Routes need roughly 20 feet of vertical clearance, and railroads spend heavily raising tunnels and bridges to open double-stack corridors. Stack trains are long, fast and sensitive to wind, since empty containers on top act like a sail.
