Staggered

adjectiveStandard termRailroad

An arrangement where rail joints on opposite sides of the track do not align.

A method of laying jointed rail where the connection points on the left rail are offset from the connection points on the right rail, usually by half a rail length. This prevents the wheels on a single axle from hitting joints simultaneously, reducing impact wear and the rhythmic rocking motion of the cars.
