A continuous path of track through a complex junction or interlocking that a dispatcher has lined for a specific train. Once a route is established, the signal system mechanically or electronically locks the track switches in position and drops all conflicting signals to red. The route remains locked until the train clears the circuit or the dispatcher runs a time-release to cancel it.
