Centralized traffic control

nounStandard termRailroad

A signal system that allows a single dispatcher to line switches and signals across hundreds of miles of track.

Centralized traffic control networks link field signals and power switches directly to a central dispatching office. The dispatcher views a digital display of track occupancy and lines up routes by clicking a screen, which sends commands to field interlockings. This eliminates the need for physical train orders and local operators, allowing bidirectional running on single-track main lines with high efficiency.
