Cess

nounStandard termRailroad

The low-lying strip of ground running immediately alongside the track ballast.

This is the graded shoulder area flanking the ballast profile, deliberately cut lower than the ties to provide a path for water drainage. It serves as a physical buffer between the track structure and the right-of-way boundary, keeping the roadbed dry and stable. Track workers frequently use this space as a safe walking path or a place to stand clear of passing trains.

Keep your tools in the cess so they don't get buried when the ballast regulator comes through.
